The photos that I share with you this week belongs to that class of pictures in which while you hear the shutter opening and then closing you know for sure you’re doing your job well. What does it mean to do your job well?
Some people may think it means the right camera, the right brand with the right perspective and have chosen the best f value. True, but maybe not. You know you have done your job well because as Tiziano Terzani once said: “tell a photographic history means to seek in things sorrounding you what you understood with your mind.” And ‘that’s the difference in the real wedding reportage. Everything else is just beautiful photographs. And we have a lot of them, probably too many.
This wedding was photographed in Milan and Riccardo & Betti have two beautiful children (of which I will avoid the name for privacy reasons). What you see in the picture is their youngest child. He enjoyed the day as only children can do, but it was too late for him. I followed him for some time and I knew that sooner or later would collapse because of tiredness throughout the day. You always see kids fall asleep during weddings and many I have photographed. But why this one? Because in this picture there is the whole story, you just need to see it. The bouquet Mother’s leaning on the table, his shirt untucked like at the end of the day should be, even a pacifier in his mouth, his face relaxed, peaceful, happy and the sofa, the best place to take a power nap.
I had to hold my breath and stay very still as 1 / 40 shutter speed as using a 45mm went against every rule of photography:) I only have two shots of this sequence. Shoot less, shoot better!

La foto che condivido con voi questa settimana appartiene a quella categoria di foto in cui mentre senti l’otturatore aprirsi e poi richiudersi sai di sicuro che stai facendo bene il tuo lavoro. Cosa vuol dire fare bene il tuo lavoro?
Qualcuno penserà che sia stato avere avuto la macchina della marca giusta, con l’ottica giusta ed avere scelto l’apertura migliore. Vero, ma anche no. Sai di aver fatto il tuo lavoro bene perchè come diceva Tiziano Terzani: “raccontare una storia fotografica vuol dire cercare nelle cose quel che uno ha capito con la testa”. E’ questa la differenza nel vero wedding reportage o reportage di matrimonio. Tutto il resto sono solo belle fotografie di cui il mondo, compreso quello della fotografia di matrimonio, è assolutamente e irrimediabilmente saturo.
Questo matrimonio è stato fotografato a Milano e Betti e Riccardo hanno due bambini bellissimi (di cui eviterò il nome per motivi di privacy). Quello che vedete in foto è il loro bimbo più piccolo. Si è divertito tutto il giorno come solo i bimbi sanno fare ma era tardi per lui. Lo seguivo già da tempo e sapevo che prima o poi sarebbe crollato a causa della stanchezza accumulata durante tutto il giorno. Si vedono sempre bambini addormentarsi durante i matrimoni e tanti ne ho fotografati. Ma perchè proprio questo? Perchè in questa foto c’è già tutto il racconto, basta solo saperlo vedere. Il bouquet della mamma appoggiato sul tavolino, la camicia fuori dai pantaloni come a fine giornata deve essere, il ciuccio ancora tra le labbra, il viso rilassato, sereno, soddisfatto ed il divano che, come per noi grandi, è il posto dove fare i migliori pisolini.
La luce principale di questa foto, al tungsteno, arriva dall’alto ma la luce complessiva dell’ambiente rendeva il tutto abbastanza omogeneo. Ho dovuto trattenere il fiato e stare molto fermo poichè 1/40 come tempo di scatto utilizzando un 45mm andava contro tutte le regole della fotografia
Ho solo due scatti di questa sequenza. Scattate meno, scattate meglio!
